Neisseria meningitidis is a Gram-negative bacterium that can cause meningitis and other forms of meningococcal diseases such as meningococcemia, a life-threatening sepsis. Neisseria meningitidis is thus responsible for considerable mortality all over the world. Most disease-causing Neisseira meningitidis strains belong to serogroups B and C in Europe, North & South America and Australia. It initially produces general symptoms like fatigue, fever, and headache and can rapidly progress to neck stiffness, coma and death in 10% of cases.
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a Gram-positive of the genus Streptococcus and recognized as a major cause of pneumonia in the late 19th century. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the main cause of community acquired pneumonia and meningitis in children and the elderly, and of septicemia in those infected with HIV. The organism also causes many types of pneumococcal infections other than pneumonia.
